Meet Quiltmaker and Singer Valerie DeLaCruz by Susan Fisher Which came first? The song, the quilt or the girlfriends? For Valerie DeLaCruz, the friends gave her the idea for the song which in turn sparked the concept for the quilt. An article she read about patchwork representing friendship seemed like a good basis for a song, so Valerie, a professional singer/songwriter, began researching quilts for lyrics. This first song, "My Girlfriends Quilt", launched a project involving computers, singing and, eventually, stitching. Valerie decided a collection of songs about friendship would be a wonderful concept. Using her computer, she searched through various sites on the Internet for the most popular "friendship" songs. She shoxe a variety of favorites from jazz, popular and country western styles and recorded them along with "My Girlfriends Quilt", which eventurally became the title of the CD. Since the word "quilt" was in the title, it followed that a quilt had to be on the cover of the recording too. Valerie had the perfect quilt in mind. When she couldn't find it already made, she decided to make it herself! As an artist and interior designer, she felt confident that she could translate her idea into reality. After reading a stack of quilting books and magazines, she planned the cover quilt and chose the fabric. Like many first time quilters, Valerie quickly learned that imagining a quilt is easier than actually sewing one, but she persevered and finished the geometric crazy quilt that appears on her CD. Valerie, who lives in New York state with her husband, Joe, and children Michael and Alessandra, has established a web site, www.valeriesgallery.com. Besides the CD, Valerie plans to market related items, including the pattern of her quilt. Her next venture is a line of notecards based on paintings she has done of quilts.
